HunterTag launches Stele Passport: the digital battery passport, ahead of the EU deadline

The platform issues the battery passports required by Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 for e-bikes, e-scooters and mopeds: statutory QR label, NFC-verifiable authenticity and a published price list, ahead of 18 February 2027

E-bike battery pack carrying a Stele Passport QR label

HunterTag S.r.l. announces Stele Passport, the platform for digital battery passports for light means of transport: e-bikes, e-scooters and electric mopeds. From 18 February 2027, Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires every LMT battery placed on the Union market to have an electronic record accessible through a QR code printed on the pack. Stele Passport issues the passport, prints the statutory label and verifies its authenticity with the same anti-cloning NFC technology born on bicycle frames.

In brief

  • From 18 February 2027 every light means of transport battery placed on the EU market must have a digital passport accessible through a QR code on the pack (Reg. (EU) 2023/1542, Art. 77 and Art. 13).
  • Stele Passport issues the passport and produces the label: a statutory QR code and, optionally, a tamper-evident NFC seal based on NTAG 424 DNA, the same chip as the HunterTag security platform.
  • Every fact in the battery’s life, from production to end of life, is recorded as an event and readable on scan, with state-of-health data collected from the field.
  • The full price list is published on stele-passport.eu: manufacturers estimate with a simulator, order online, and on the Startup plan pay by card, with no setup fee.
  • Live demonstration passports, issued by the production system, can be scanned on the site.

Stele Passport grows out of HunterTag’s experience with digital identity for vehicles: giving a physical object an identity that cannot be cloned and that anyone can verify with a smartphone. With the Batteries Regulation that identity becomes a legal requirement: the passport gathers the pack’s composition, carbon footprint, state of health and history, and must be reachable through a QR code printed on the label.

The platform is built around a manufacturer’s real cycle: serial numbers are minted before production, labels arrive printed or as print files, and pairing happens on the line, where the first event in the record is the birth of the pack itself.

With HunterTag we learned to give a frame a digital identity that cannot be cloned. With Stele Passport we give it to the battery, where from 18 February 2027 it will no longer be a choice but a legal requirement. We built the platform so a manufacturer can do it alone: prices are published, the estimate runs online on your own volumes, and the first passport is issued the same day.

A deadline that lands on the order calendar first

The date set by Art. 77 of the Regulation is not attached to any delegated act and has never been amended since 2023. For manufacturers and importers, though, the real deadline comes earlier: packs ordered in autumn 2026 with normal production and shipping times reach the European market close to the date, and must arrive with the passport already live and the QR already on the label. Stele Passport publishes the full legal chain, article by article, quoted from the consolidated text, at stele-passport.eu/deadline.

The same anti-cloning technology, a new perimeter

The QR code required by the regulation identifies the battery, but a QR code can be photocopied. For manufacturers who want more, Stele Passport pairs the QR with a tamper-evident NFC seal based on NTAG 424 DNA, the AES-encrypted chip of the HunterTag platform: a scan cryptographically verifies that the label is the original one and that the seal has not been opened. And when authenticity cannot be verified, the passport says so, instead of pretending otherwise.

The event record is written in sequence and cannot be rewritten: production, pairing, service, second life, end of life. It is the same discipline the regulation demands of passport data, applied from day one to the whole platform.

How Stele Passport works

01

Estimate and order online

The full price list is published. Manufacturers estimate on their own volumes with the simulator, order online, and on the Startup plan pay by card, with no setup fee.

02

Serials and labels

Serial numbers are minted and labels arrive printed and shipped, or as print files for the customer’s own line.

03

Pairing on the line

The label is paired with the pack during production: the passport is live at the first scan, and every later fact is added to the record as an event.
